Everyday more and more forests are deforested. People who once relied on these areas to live and survive are now in need to find another place to call home. Animals are mass migrating to other areas, or going extinct due to the loss of their homes. More than 1.5 billion tons of carbon is released into our atmosphere each year due to deforestation.
We need to start making a difference, or risk reaching a point of no return for our world’s forests. So here are 5 things you can do from home to help stop deforestation and help our planet start recovering.
1. Plant a tree
Planting a tree is one of the most basic first steps we can take to make an impact on our environment.
Trees help conserve energy during hot and cold seasons, they provide habitats for different species of birds and insects as well as help improve the soil to decrease the total runoff and erosion to the soil.
Trees also help combat global warming and filter water and air. They do it all through the process of collecting and storing CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) within themselves, while releasing O2 (oxygen) in return.
So when we plant trees we help collect more CO2 from the atmosphere.
We all have heard about the importance of recycling and how important it is for us to recycle what we can.
There are many materials that can be recycled. Paper, glass, metal, and plastic are the most commonly known that we can recycle at home.
A good example of the impact recycling can have on the environment is through paper. According to Greentumble, if 10% out of the average amount of paper used in a year were recycled, approximately 25 million trees would be saved. You can make this difference by separating your recycles from your normal trash at your home.
3. Shop sustainably
Shopping sustainably is an act of conservation that brings many benefits. Sustainable shopping helps reduce waste and helps improve your health. Many products contain chemicals and components that can be harsh for your health, sustainable products bring you the best that natural elements can offer without being aggressive as an ordinary product.
These products help reduce pollution and contamination that would be caused if the product purchased wouldn’t be sustainable, for this reason they also help you decrease your carbon footprint.
4. Make and promote sustainable choices
There are a variety of ways you can fight deforestation with the choices you make daily. You can avoid disposable items, choose recycled products, and use sustainable products.
You can shop with companies that commit to give back to the environment, avoid the use of plastic when possible, decrease the amount of CO2 released when driving through carpooling, and so much more.
Make the changes and choices that not only best benefits you but that also positively impacts the environment.
5. Support organizations that fight deforestation
There are many organizations that help combat deforestation. Both through proper procedures to plant and by preserving forest areas locally and internationally. Reforestree helps combat deforestation in the Amazon region through their MyForest product. If you are interested in helping fight deforestation, Reforestree’s MyForest is a fantastic place to start.
Conservation.org is another organization that fights deforestation. They work in many places, one of them being the devastated forests of Madagascar.
With these organizations, you have different ways to take part and contribute. Find the ones that will best fit you and your purpose and see how you can work with them to help prevent deforestation.
